Picasso and peers

　　As you’ll find out in this guide to the fundamentals of cubism, there is more to the genre than its most famous proponent. Cubism—often identified by flattened, geometric shapes, overlapping, simplified forms and fragmented spatial planes—was quite possibly the most influential movement in 20th-century art.

　　The author: Anne Gantefuhrer-Trier studied art history, German literature and modern history in Bonn and now heads the Department of Photography at the Cologne art-auction house Van Ham Kunstauktionen. Her publications and exhibitions include Jose Maria Sert. Photographien (1996) and Jeff Wall – Bilder von Landschaften (1999), and contributions to books on Candida Hofer and August Sander.
