Singing Towards the Future

Portia White had a dream: to sing on stage. Even as a little girl in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she could imagine an audience before her, clapping as she took her bow. But how could a poor black girl with ten siblings make her dream come true? She eventually climbed onto stages all across North and South America as well as Central, crossing that color barrier to enter concert halls and sing in the 1930s and 1940s. Later, she became a teacher and mentor of other well known and successful singers.
