A scholar of Spanish language and literature now working independently, Doremus surveys the forms by which Mexicans expressed intense nationalism in the decades following the Revolution. She finds that they stressed shared or collective identity, compensated for social and economic inequalities, emphasized character traits preparing them for the modern world, and urged their compatriots to gain self-awareness to avoid losing identity to forces from the US and elsewhere.
