Devereaux (John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Trade and Negotiation Program, US), Lawrence (Peterson Institute for International Economics, US), and Watkins (practice in organizational
behavior, INSEAD-Institut Européen d’Administration Des Affaires, France) present the second of two volumes to analyze case studies of US trade negotiation. This volume’s cases concern dispute
resolution negotiations within the context of the World Trade Organization system. The cases include the United States-European Union dispute over hormone-treated beef, the US Trade
Representative’s challenge of the European Union’s banana regime, negotiations between the US Trade Representative and the Japanese Fair Trade Commission over competition between Eastman Kodak
Co. and Fuji Photo Film, the successful European challenge to US steel tariffs instituted by George W. Bush, Brazil’s case against US cotton subsidies, and the US-EU dispute over trade in
genetically modified crops. The cases describe the substance of the conflicts and their political contexts and also describe how they have played out in the dispute resolution process. The
purpose of the cases is descriptive and policy recommendations and normative arguments have been avoided. The companion volume explores cases of negotiations over trade rules that until
recently were considered national domestic matters solely. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
