Skip Hoffman, missing in action as a result of WWII blunders, lives a secret, surrogate life in Germany, until, by an ironic twist of fate, his son is missing in action in Vietnam. Much like his own mother's experiences during the futile hunt for Skip, he encounters a wall of silence, then unravels misconduct by military brass, until eventually he is led to newfound wisdom, compassion, and redemption.
