After fifteen years in the United States, Shakilah Nair returns to her home in China, pregnant and unmarried, in a story told from the viewpoints of the women around her, from her mother and best friend to rumor-telling schoolgirls and a woman she loves, all of whom believe in the power of seen and unseen spirits.
