內容簡介

The rich architectural and urban heritage of this once prominent Central Asian city (in present-day Uzbekistan) is described in a series of detailed chapters, each well-illustrated with color and b&w plates, maps, and axonometric architectural drawings. A historical introduction to Bukhara's pre-Islamic origins and later significance in Islamic times is followed by a chapter on the morphology of cities in Sogdia and eastern Iran. Subsequent chapters describe the city's essential elements in successive periods, with attention to topography, archaeology, literary evidence, water systems, the Friday mosque, the citadel and registan, the inner city, and the suburbs. Other topics include special mosque types and domestic architecture. The authors teach city planning, oriental studies, and Islamic architecture in Italy and Germany.
