Leu (Portuguese and Brazilian studies, U. of Bristol, UK) examines the connection between popular music and Brazilian culture and identity by describing the contributions and influence of
Caetano Veloso on M繳sica Popular Brasiliera, which developed in the mid 1960s from a split in bossa nova music, but also as a reaction to the political coup at the time. She discusses musical
style and sexual politics in the Tropicalist period, Veloso's vocal style, the relationship between language and meaning in his songs, the love song tradition in Brazil, and how Veloso fits
into that tradition. She includes in her study analysis of iconography such as album covers and TV appearances, as well as lyrics. The appendix contains the author's interview with Veloso.
