Carter (dance studies, Middlesex U.) places the ballets within the social context of Victorian and Edwardian London, and explores their relationship to the dominant beliefs and value systems of
sexuality and morality. She looks at the status, background, and working lives of the working-class ballet girls; and how the image of the dancer was constructed by the ballets, by primary and
secondary sources, and by the dancers themselves. The Alhambra and Empire in London are the focus of her study, and she appends lists of ballets in the first between 1884 and 1912, and the
