Basing his analysis on his readings of General Motor’s internal records, Turner (emeritus, history, Yale U.) evaluates the American corporation’s ownership of the European automaker, Opel, and
its dealings with the German Third Reich in the years preceding and during World War II. He describes attempts by GM to gain control of Volkswagen, failed Nazi attempts to control Opel in the
pre-war period, and other business matters. He also evaluates General Motors’ culpability in the crimes of the Nazi regime, largely absolving the American executives of the company of
responsibility, even if they did pocket wartime profits. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
