Tom Jones

Reacting against the sentimentality and moralism of the earliest English novels, Henry Fielding created a work with a complex and profoundly human main character: the foundling Tom Jones. Soon after its 1749 publication, Tom Jones was condemned for being "lewd." What riled its critics was its supremely funny, satirical attack on the folies of eighteenth-century British society.
