This study examines mystery series and selected novels with gay and lesbian main characters that were published in 1961 to early 2003. Markowitz surveys the subgenres of mainstream detective fiction before examining gay mystery series, which she groups by the main characters' professions. She also lists themes addressed across the series. The result is a comprehensive and intriguing look at a growing variation on what Gertrude Stein called "the only really modern novel form."
