Scarpari (geography, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) uses case studies of the historic districts (or ciudades viejas--old cities) of nine Latin American cities to
investigate the relationships between heritage tourism, globalization, and the Latin American plaza and barrio. With an approach grounded in cultural geography he explores the histories of
architectural change in the old cities, especially as they related to themes of land use; taxation, finances, and remittances; heritage preservation and local planning; community participation
and gentrification; urban design and the automobile; and urban and regional theory. Annotation 穢2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
