Bailey (art history, Clark U., Worcester, Mass.) has done a commendable job of presenting in a concise format a readable and coherent overview of the issues, contexts, and history that surround
the vast field of colonial art and architecture throughout Latin America. Chapters present discussion of the European models that influenced colonial forms, the indigenous response to
colonization, the forms of imperialism, the guilds and academies for art, major church architecture, and arts of the aristocracy. A (brief) final chapter alludes to the artistic impact of the
Iberian presence in Asia and Africa. Annotation 穢2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
