Hosker, a cabinetmaker specializing in furniture restoration, offers a concise introduction to veneering, the craft of affixing a thin layer of wood to a substrate. Veneering has great appeal because it conserves valuable rare wood and allows decorative effects that are impossible to achieve using solid wood. It is well suited to beginners and those on a budget as the basic tools are comparatively inexpensive and common fiberboard can be used as a base. An excellent instructor, Hosker shows readers which materials and equipment are required and explains the most commonly used techniques: crossbanding, bookmatching, inlaying, and parquetry. This book does not cover marquetry (the art of making pictures in veneer) other than briefly showing how to inlay store-bought pieces. But this is not a drawback, as an entire book would be needed to do justice to such a complex discipline. Recommended for all public library woodworking collections.
