Morrall began this work as a dissertation with the Courtauld Institute in London. Breu was a contemporary of Dnrer; the style of his works, their Reformation themes, and their media (painting
and engraving) parallel those of his better known colleague. The similarity may lie in the patronage of the time, an aspect of Breu's career that receives emphasis here, in the context of
Morrall's extensive discussion of the Reformation in Germany. Morrall describes the formal qualities of iconography and style of Breu's works, the circumstances behind the creation of
individual works, Breu's workshop practice, and the reception of his work by critics then and now. The volume is lavishly illustrated in quality b&w and some color plates. Annotation c.
