書名取自班揚的著名宗教小說《天路歷程》,薩克雷的成名作,也是19世紀英國具有廣泛現實意義諷刺文學的傑作。小說的女主人公貝姬·夏普是個貧窮畫家的女兒,天生麗質而性情乖巧,讀書期間飽受世人的冷眼,走入社會后便開始投機冒險的生涯,為達到獵取金錢和躋身上流社會的目的一意諂媚逢迎,遂一路順暢,飛黃騰達。「如果我有5000英磅,我也會是一個好女人。」貝姬一語中的,道破了現實社會中人與人赤裸裸的金錢關系。
