本書是一本為獻給著名應用語言學家H‧G‧威多森而出版的論文集。由G‧庫克和B‧賽德豪佛共同編輯。全書共收24篇論文,涉及的領域包括:語言教學理論和平共處研究、第二語言習得、口頭和書面話語、國際英語、交際能力和語法、體裁和修辭、跨文化交際、語料庫語言學、文學和文學教學、課堂實踐等。

本書可分為5個部分。第一部分直接探討理論及研究和教學之間的關系,從不同角度對危及靈活性和創造力的因素表示了關注。第二部分討論第二語言習得,文章就第二語言學習的成功的標準是否應為與母語使用者的越相像越好這一富有爭論性的問題展開討論。第三部分涉及話語分析、對比修辭學、間接話語、語篇對形式的影響、話語結構匠作用、法律語言學等問題。有的文章論述語料庫語言學。第四部分論證語言教學與文學的關系,探討在外語教學過程中如何利用文學作品去引導學生,使學生後來能逐漸閱讀更艱深的作品。另外,文中還提到要消除文學的神秘性,鼓勵用非文學方法來指引學生欣賞文學語言。最後部分是有關語言理論在課堂教學中的應用。

全書覆蓋面廣,信息量大,所載的文章有的論證嚴密,有的資料豐富,有的見解獨到,各具特色,是一本應用語言學方面不可多得的好書。它適用于攻讀應用語言學和外語教學理論的碩士生和博士生,對應用語言學研究者和外語教師來說,也是一本有價值的參考書。
