”You\’ve Got Mail”: A New Way of Communication
Every morning when Joy arrives at her office, the first thing she does is to turn on the computer and check her e-mail. This morning, there were three messages for Joy: one was from her customer, Mr. Brown, in Tokyo, one from her pen pal Mei-li, and one from Susan. Mr. Brown asked Joy to send him a catalogue, because he wanted to shop for something from home. In her e-mail, Susan told Joy how wonderful her life was at New York University. She said that next week her American friends would give a party to celebrate her 22nd birthday. Mei-li\’s message was about using the Internet. She told Joy how excited she was when she was chatting with her friends on the net for hours.
After reading the messages, Joy returns the mails right away. She sends an electronic birthday card to Susan to wish her happy birthday. She tells Susan that she will fly to New York next month on a business trip. She hopes that they will meet at that time. Then she writes to Mei-li. She tells her to send some interesting website addresses to her so that she can surf the Net without wasting too much time. To Mr. Brown, she e-mails him her company\’s catalogue and expects that he will place the order that afternoon. Within twenty minutes, Joy completes her communication. She feels satisfied.
Now more and more people are choosing to communicate with their friends or customers via e-mail like Joy. People like to e-mail their messages, because they think it\’s cheaper and faster than talk on the phone. E-mailing our messages via internet is becoming a popular way of communication as we are entering into the twenty-first century.
